In the U Music Education Foundation percussion program , our goal is to build a solid foundation for young children to understand, experience and appreciate the beauty of music. We stress the basic fundamentals of music which includes rhythm, time or "feel", pitch and the ability to play music with others., especially in percussion performance.
All these skills are essential for any musician playing any instrument. Playing percussion trains students to think ahead and sometimes do more than one thing at a time. It could be stomping our feet, clapping our hands or moving from one instrument to another, but it is all done within the music and for fun.
We also stress good practice habits and play an unbelievable number of percussion instruments. We believe in "reading" music. We believe musicians must develop rhythmic confidence to play well with other musicians. We encourage self-_expression, creativity, goal setting, problem solving, listening, team work, social ability.
